Some scholars maintain that Wizard Zong first appears in the
historical record over four thousand years ago. In support of this, a
curious Egyptian hieroglyph from the great pyramid of Cheops (c 2500BC),
translates as 'Bungus! Zong was here!' . A number of historical
works (including from Plato, Josephus and Cicero) may refer to
Zong. St Augustine, for example, describes an encounter with
a 'most remarkable magician, known as Mystic Zongus, who
produced a blue firestorm from a cow's
udders! Unfortunately, many people were very amused...' (Confessions,
p566). The first clear reference to Zong in the historical record occurs
in the early tenth century. He is the central figure in the legendary
'Chronicles of Zong', which survive today in mostly complete form. In
modern times there have been a number of alleged sightings. Shown below
are the photographs with the best claim to authenticity.
